There’s moisture in my safe. Is this normal?

Depending on the safe you’re using, you may find that if you open it for the first time in several weeks or months, there can be a musty smell and/or moisture build-up. In some cases, this can lead to water or moisture damage to the items inside. Due to the fireproof and waterproof structure of many safes, they can provide the perfect condition to absorb moisture inside the safe. To help prevent this from happening, you should plan to air a First Alert Safe out at least every two weeks for a minimum of 20 minutes each time.

You can also invest in a small packet of silica gel, the same packets that are used to keep moisture out of boxes and bags. It will help absorb moisture in your safe. Delicate items like pictures or intricate jewelry should be placed in an air-tight container or bag before you put them into your safe to help avoid damage. All of these precautions should help to maintain a First Alert Safe, as well as the provide moisture control for valuable items inside it.

I’ve lost the key or combination to my safe. What do I do now?

You can request a new combination or key by following these instructions:

The door to my safe is stuck, what should I do?

This may happen if the bars do not disengage fully. You can try one of the following:

  • Insert your override key (the one with the square top) and while turning the key, take a flathead screwdriver and insert it in the crack of the door and slowly pry it open.

  • Another method is to lay your First Alert Safe on the right-hand side and using the override key to open the door.

My key is not broken, but it does not work in the safe. What should I do?

It may be possible that some debris/dust is caught in the lock of your unit. Please try the following:

  • Check the engraved key number and verify it matches the engraved letter on the key cylinder.

  • Spray WD-40 oil in the lock.

  • Have the form legally notarized to verify your ownership of the unit and then email the notarized form to the First Alert Support Team at notaryletter@firstalert.com, or fax it to 800-603-2878.
