First Alert Fire Alarms, Smoke Detectors & Combo Smoke / CO Alarms

When it comes to outfitting your home with a dependable Smoke Alarm or Smoke Detector that is celebrated for its efficiency and performance, First Alert has gone the additional mile by incorporating a series of Fire Safety Devices that excel in offering the ultimate in peace of mind.

Numerous studies have concluded that the presence of a functioning Smoke Alarm can reduce the number of fatalities associated with fire by a staggering half! Even though thousands of lives have already been saved by the smoke detectors currently in place, there still exists a series of problems that have yet to be addressed. It is estimated that 12% of homes that fail to utilize smoke alarms experience more than half of all documented fires. An even more frightening statistic has concluded that a third of all installed smoke detectors are non-functioning. This can be attributed to the failure of replacing a worn out battery. Finally, many homes simply don't feature the required number of active smoke alarms needed to provide premier security. For additional levels in protection, check out the First Alert Store's selection of First Alert Combination Smoke and CO Alarms or take a glance at our First Alert Smoke Alarm Feature Comparison Chart to find an appropriate smoke alarm to match your individual needs and requirements.

There are many different brands of smoke alarms available on the market. These smoke detectors fall under two basic types: ionization and photoelectric.

Ionization alarms and detectors sound more quickly when a flaming, fast moving fire occurs.

Photoelectric alarms and detectors are quicker at sensing smoldering, smoky fires.

There are also combination smoke alarms that combine ionization and photoelectric into one unit, called dual sensor smoke alarms.

Because both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms are better at detecting different, but still potentially fatal fires, and because homeowners cannot predict what type of fire might start in a home, the USFA recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric or dual sensor smoke alarms. Additionally there are First Alert Wireless Interconnect Smoke Detectors and First Alert OneLink Alarms that are capable of connecting so that when one alarm is triggered, all of the connecting alarms sound off, making notification that much louder.

In addition to the basic types of alarms, there are smoke alarms made to meet the needs of people with hearing disabilities. These smoke detectors may use strobe lights that flash and/or vibrate to assist in alerting those who are unable to hear standard smoke alarms when they sound.

Where to Place Smoke Alarms: One in every bedroom, and at least one on every level of the home.
