Sundre fire chief credits detector for saving lives - 01/19/08

Sundre fire chief John Whitesell is crediting a carbon monoxide detector for saving two women from serious injury or even death. At about noon Wednesday Leslie Burke and her mother Phyllis returned to their duplex in northwest Sundre to find the alarm ringing. They were about to disconnect the detector when they decided to call the fire department just in case. ****Firefighters found very high levels of the colourless, odourless compound throughout the home. Whitesell said there was enough carbon monoxide in the building to kill the women had they been at home. "If it wasn't working we could have been sitting there passed out, maybe dead," said Leslie Burke. The leak may have been caused by a temperature inversion that recirculated some of the furnace exhaust, said Whitesell. Three people have died in Calgary recently as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning while there have been several other close calls.
