Three Killed in Wayne County Fire - 01/21/09
Three people are dead after an apartment fire early Wednesday in Wayne County.
The fire hit an apartment
building in Waymart early
Wednesday.
Emergency officials and firefighters on the scene said a mother and her two sons died in the fire in Waymart. Names are not being released until family members are notified.
The blaze broke out around 1 a.m. Wednesday in the apartment house along Gravity Planes Street. The fire was out within minutes after crews arrived.
Investigators said it started when a pot was left on the stove and smoke spread upstairs quickly. The three victims were found together in an upstairs bedroom.
"It's very tough. Especially when you have small children involved. We have grief counselors with us here now to go through the whole scene with the fireman that did go into the scene to pull the victims out. It's tough A lot of people don't realize how tough it is on people. Everybody kind of forgets about the EMS part of the situation. But we have grief counselors for us," said assistant chief Clifford Jones.
People living on the right side of the apartment where the fire happened made it out safely and are staying elsewhere.
